Higher Education in United States.

In the USA higher education begins when students finish primary and secondary schools, where education lasts 12 years. Higher education may be of several forms: 2 years at college (community or junior colleges) or 4 year at college, university, vocational and technical schools, and professional schools such as law and medical schools. Such education can be either public or private. The number of students also different, some excellent universities can have near thousand students and other have 50, 000 students.

The specialization of colleges and universities is also various, some concentrate on technical field, other on so called “liberal arts” and there are institutions that pay more attention to music or art.

American Government and Department of Education don’t work with accreditation. They create special accrediting agencies which are busy with such matters and accreditation of colleges and universities. So, make sure that chosen college is accredited by some organization recognized by the Department of Education. It means that your future degree will be recognized and valid at the job market. Usually colleges and universities have so called regional accreditation, because they are accredited by local accrediting agency.

Except general accreditation, colleges and universities may have some programs which also must be accredited, like engineering programs.
