Entrance tests
April 14th, 2008Many US colleges and tuitions require their applicants to take at least one of the diversity of standardized tests. These kinds of tests include the SAT which is known like a Scholastic Aptitude Test, also ACT test, widely spread Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and one more GMAT which means Graduate Management Test of Admission. Moreover, applicants who are foreigners from around the world are usually required to take the TOEFL as well. This kind of test is known as an English as a Foreign Language Test.
Most regular tests are worked out to evaluate students’ skills. The questions ´which are included into tests are designed especially in order to find out weather a person can find the way to solve problems. It doesn’t generally measures knowledge of certain facts but person’s integrity as individual.
The purpose of these tests is directed into giving colleges help in finding of ways to evaluate all their applicants equally. Comparison of grades obtained during the courses or after passing exams is not constantly the same. The main reason of that is that different schools have dissimilar academic standards.
An admissions counselor of university has no chance to determine how difficult the calculus or finances course a student took was. Comparing student’s score on a special test to the rate of another learner who took the similar standardized test, gives a nice opportunity to the counselor to have more appropriate idea of how both students can be compared.
International students who apply for a scholar program (it can be bachelor’s degree) will obviously need to take either the TOEFL or the SAT I tests.
Some schools will probably need the SAT II as well. There is a great variety of schools which accept the ACT instead of the SATI.
Though each of these tests has own structure, certain requirements and procedure of taking, you should carefully familiarize with one you’ve chosen in order to find out weather it is an acceptable test for you personally and in order to avoid misunderstandings.
